Wildlife and Walks on The Isle of Mull
Mull offers a number of very good restaurants and snack/coffees places, several businesses who organise boat and land trips and of course the geology is fascinating. The island is covered and compounded with thousands of feet of lava sheets from the eruption of the central volcano thirty to forty million years ago if you have an interest in geology there are a number of specialised books written by people who live on the island, some can be found in Corrachan Cottage or in a local book shop. Dervaig is a traditional looking village 8 miles from the main shopping area of Tobermory and is an ideal base for bird watching, cycling, hiking, wildlife safari's and for a quiet holiday. The village is well served with 2 shops/post office, a pub/hotel/restaurant, a variety of places to eat within walking distance of the cottage and a bus that runs from Tobermory to the village and then on to the beautiful beach at Calgary bay about 5 miles away. It is also home to Mull Little Theatre the venue for a number of professional productions throughout the summer season. Above Dervaig on the road to Tobermory there is the most wonderful view overlooking the village and Loch Cuin and on a clear day the islands can be spotted through the haze. From this point above the village the Kilmore Standing Stones can be accessed through the forest. The first stones are easily found but the second set are a good 10 -15 mins walk further into the trees. From here in the opening there is another great view of the village. There are a number of walks around the area and books are available to help you plan your route including the walk from the cottage through Quinish estate to the fossel tree. Tobermory is the main shopping centre with a Co-op supermarket, the award winning bakery and delicatessen, the chocolate factory and the studio for Mull artist Angus Stewart. It has a number of very good restaurants and café's and Mull pottery. Tobermory also is the home of the recently opened Community Butcher where local produce is available through out the year. Cycling on Mull is an adventure, the very fit will find it easy but the hills are a bit of a challenge to those of us who only venture out on the bike during the holidays. There are several circular rides from the village and the views are awesome. You really become aware of the smell of the earth or the sound of the birds and more likely to spot an Orchid on the side of the road, all in all a memory to make you want to go out again. And the feel good factor arrives in the evening when you are back at the cottage in front of the fire with a glass of wine. Mull has a lot to offer the whole family and if you would like to know more phone….
