loch cuin isle of mull

Wildlife and Walks on The Isle of Mull

The beautiful Island of Mull lies on the West coast of Scotland and is one of the largest of the Hebridean islands.  It is easily accessed by ferry - www.calmac.co.uk -  from Oban, Ardnamuchan or Lochaline.  The weather is generally mild but we do have our moments although most of the time this doesn’t matter.  It’s the feel of the island, the colours of the evening sky, and the bird song.  It is a place to come and relax or to be adventurous.
Mull offers a number of restaurants and coffees shops, several businesses who organise boat and land trips and of course the geology which is fascinating. The island is covered and compounded with thousands of feet of lava sheets from the eruption of the central volcano thirty to forty million years ago, if you have an interest in geology there are a number of specialised books written by people who live on the island, some can be found in Corrachan Cottage or in a local book shop.

Above Dervaig on the road to Tobermory there is a wonderful view overlooking the village and Loch Cuin and on a clear day coll and Tiree can be spotted through the haze.  From this point above the village the Kilmore Standing Stones can be accessed through the forest. The first stones are easily found but the second set are a good 10 –15 mins walk further into the trees.  From here in the opening there is another great view of the village. There are a number of walks around the area and books in the information file to help you plan your route including the walk from the cottage through Quinnish estate to the fossil tree.

Tobermory is the main shopping centre with a Co-Op and Spar, a bakery/delicatessen, the Chocolate Shop and the studio for Mull artist Angus Stewart.    There are several restaurants and café’s including Café Fish where local fish is prepared and cooked, to be recommended.  Tobermory is also the home of the Community Butcher where local meat is available through out the year.  Along the road to Calgary is a new interesting looking restaurant to be opened this year 2009, Tom the chef is passionate about food and we wish them all Good Luck.

Cycling on Mull is an adventure, the very fit will find it easy but the hills are a bit of a challenge to those of us who only venture out during the holidays.  There are several circular rides from the village and the views are awesome.  You really become aware of the smell of the earth and the sound of the birds and more likely to spot an Orchid on the side of the road, all in all a memory to make you want to go out again.  And the feel good factor arrives in the evening when you are back at the cottage in front of the fire with a glass of wine.
